remains a private, independent, and nonsectarian institution. Noted for its gothic-inspired architecture and highlighted by the iconic Duke Chapel as its center point, Duke’s campus covers more than 8,700 acres, with over 7,000 dedicated to the Duke Forest and its research facilities. Surrounded by the city of Durham, Duke’s campus is in a suburban setting that has “emerged as the heart of North Carolina’s hi-tech Research Triangle,” and is continually recognized as one of the most vibrant places to live.

With 10 different schools and colleges to choose from, Duke’s 6,600 undergraduate students are equipped for a variety of different careers and specializations, including Duke’s top-tier graduate programs. Ranked as a top-five research-oriented university, Duke spent close to one billion dollars conducting research during the 2010-11 fiscal year. Around 30 percent of the student body is affiliated with one of more than 30 fraternities and sororities on campus.

Duke’s actively engaged student body is heavily supportive of their successful athletic teams, the Blue Devils. Known best for their men’s basketball program, their storied program holds one of sports all-time great rivalries with the University of North Carolina’s Tar Heels.

Notable attendees and faculty include: Former U.S. President Richard Nixon, two-time presidential candidate Ron Paul, a host of NBA players including Carlos Boozer, Kyrie Irving, and Grant Hill, and four Nobel Laureates.
