only a mile down from Harvard along the Charles River. A private research university traditionally known for its research and education in the applied physical sciences and engineering, MIT has expanded beyond its earliest educational scope to provide top-tier programs in the social sciences as well. MIT is consistently recognized as one of the most prestigious universities in the world.

Home to the first architectural school in the U.S., MIT’s campus is distinguished by its unprecedented and eminent buildings. MIT is divided into 6 schools and colleges; the School of Engineering and Sloan School of Management are among its most notable. With 4,500 undergraduates, students are guaranteed housing in one of MIT’s 12 dormitories; housing decisions are based upon students’ preferences and provide a range of socially diverse cultures, communities, and organizations. Of the 4,500 undergraduates, only freshman are required to live on campus. A significant portion of students are involved with the active Greek life on campus. Aptly named as the Engineers, MIT varsity athletics compete at the Division III level and are represented by “nature’s engineer,” the beaver.

Notable alumni and attendees include 76 Nobel laureates, astronaut Buzz Aldrin, and U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan.
