Residing on the eastern portion of the San Francisco Bay (north of Oakland), Cal’s campus setting is mid-size city and its 1,200 acres house the Space Sciences Lab, Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, UC Botanical Gardens, and an 800 acre ecological preserve. Aside from the institution being one of the top public universities in the U.S., UC Berkeley and its dedication to research has provided the university with the distinction of being one of the top schools globally as well.
UC Berkeley’s undergraduate program focuses on the arts, sciences, and a high level of coexistence with graduates. Cal offers more than 100 Bachelor’s degrees across five colleges to its 26,000 undergraduates. Cal also offers highly ranked graduate schools -17 of which were ranked 1, by US News and World Report, in their respective fields. There are more than 1,200 student organizations on campus, including a hub of progressively-minded student activities and organizations. Greek life accounts for 10% of the student population.
The California Golden Bears compete at the Division I level in the Pac-12 Conference, along with in-state rivals USC, UCLA, and Stanford. The Golden Bears have produced numerous championships and champions –skier Jonny Moseley, and swimmers Natalie Coughlin and Anthony Ervin are three Olympic gold medalists to have recently attended.
Notable alumni and attendees include actor Gregory Peck, NFL player Tony Gonzalez, and Dr. Robert Oppenheimer (scientific director of the Manhattan Project).
