of 1,250 acres offers a welcoming college atmosphere with strong ties and relations to the nation’s capital and its resources. The campus incorporates the regionally-fitting red-brick Georgian style architecture into its academic buildings and residential areas. Considered to be a “Public Ivy,” the University of Maryland consistently ranks among the top 25 public universities in the country and is the largest educational institution in the D.C. metropolitan area.

The University of Maryland offers 127 undergraduate degrees and 112 graduate degrees via 13 different colleges and schools. Among Maryland’s most notable schools include 29 programs –both undergraduate and graduate– that consistently rank among the top-ten –nationally– in their respective fields. The University has an undergraduate enrollment of 26,500 and an additional 11,000 graduate students. UMD offers more than 500 clubs and organizations on campus, including 35 fraternities and sororities that involve close to 15% of the undergraduate student body. Because of its accessibility, freshmen are not required to live on campus, although many still choose to do so.

The Maryland Terrapins (Terps) formerly competed at the Division I level as founding members of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), but moved to the Big Ten Conference at the conclusion of the 2013-14 year. The Terrapins have consistently produced power house teams in soccer, lacrosse, and basketball.

Notable alumni include Muppets creator Jim Henson, Kevin Plank (founder of Under Armour), and Google co-founder Sergey Brin.
